MARYSVILLE — Little mistakes befell the Tomahawk baseball squad, adding up to their first league loss at the hands of Cascade.

After defeating the Bruins 8-1 in the first game of the series, Marysville-Pilchuck struggled at home, losing 12-2 in five innings.

“They were right on our tails for a reason,” said M-P coach Kurt Koshelnik after the loss.

The Tomahawks trailed by three runs in their first at-bat, a margin cushioned a bit by leadoff hitter Levi Cartas’ solo home run to kick off the inning. But it was all the Tomahawks could muster in the bottom of the first, and Cartas’ effort was answered and more as Cascade led off the second inning with a solo homer of its own, the first of four runs they would score that inning. It was 10-1 by the end of the third inning and 12-1 going into the bottom of the fourth, forcing the Tomahawks to muster two runs to force a sixth inning and keep their comeback hopes alive.

M-P was able to get runners on base in the bottom of the fifth, Casey Keister getting a walk and Steve Shane on a fielder’s choice. Stringing together a hit, a hit by pitcher and a walk, Shane had the Tomahawks’ second run, but the Bruin defense closed out the inning, stopping Cartas as he went for third base.

The game was Marysville’s second that week, following a week with five-straight games.

“There’s never a good time to lose, but it’s a good time to reassess,” Koshelnik said, adding that after an intense week of games, “It will be nice to have a practice.”
