MARYSVILLE – Siloe Galvan scored 16 goals for Marysville-Pilchuck High School’s boys soccer team last year.
So Coach Paul Bartley expects a lot from the senior forward-midfielder this season. He didn’t disappoint with a goal in the Tomahawks 2-0 win over the rival Arlington Eagles Tuesday night at Quil Ceda Stadium.
But there was no way Bartley could have known that sophomore midfielder Randy Galvan would be the one scoring the other goal.
Bartley expects the older Galvan, senior defender Jaime Bombach and junior midfielder Daniel Amador to lead the squad this year. The trio made the All-Wesco team last year.
“They are the nuts and bolts of the team,” Bartley said.
The coach said a pleasant surprise has been the depth of the squad this year. In the few games they have had, “the play did not drop off when the subs went in.” Another big surprise is the play of the only freshman on varsity, the midfielder with the famous name – Edgar Martinez.
While Arlington was shut out in this game, Eagles Coach Mike Gudgeon said he is expecting a lot from senior forward Stephen Caponey, the team’s leading goal-maker the past two years. Another forward, Eric AceroRosas, excels at feeding him the ball, and junior forward Wyatt Bierer, up from the junior varsity, has “stepped up this year,” the coach added.
Anchoring the defense in senior midfielder Edher Escalante and senior defender Carter Mooring. Gudgeon also has high hopes for sophomore goalie Noah Sawdon.
