MARYSVILLE — The Tomahawk volleyball team showed resilience, bouncing back from the wrong side of an 11-1 run to defeat Mountlake Terrace in four games.
The Hawks went 11-1 late in game one to take the lead and the game after trailing by seven, but the Marysville-Pilchuck girls ended their non-conference calendar with a 23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-9 win Sept. 24.
“I wish I felt like we were more consistent,” said Tomahawk coach Shelly Johnson. “But we have moments where we look good — we could take on anybody.”
It was a balanced attack, with setter Riley Taitingfong’s 39 assists spread evenly among the night’s three top hitters, with Alisha Oden, Cali Cull and Makiya Nelson each earning 11 kills. In the middle, Oden had nine stuffed blocks and two aces. Nelson had three aces.
In the second through fourth games, the Tomahawks never gave up their lead after the 14th point.
Although the girls begin their league calendar against Lake Stevens Oct. 1, there are several teams the girls will be playing for the second time. One is Snohomish, who Oden is looking forward to playing again after winning their first encounter.
“We’re working well as a team now and communicating better,” Oden said after the game. Asked what fans can look forward to in the league calendar, the senior had a one-word answer.
“Wins,” she said.
