MARYSVILLE – Marysville-Pilchuck expects to have another tough basketball squad with 3A All-Wesco first-teamers senior RaeQuan Battle and junior Luke Dobler returning.
But the Tomahawks also have obtained two of Marysville Getchell’s top players as both Cameron Stordahl and Ethan Jackson transferred to M-P.
At practice last Tuesday, coach Barry Gould said the team is undefeated now, and he hopes to stay that way. But it will take a little extra from each player to keep from being ordinary.
Meanwhile, Battle signed a letter of intent to play basketball at the University of Washington Wednesday. The 6-foot-5 shooting guard’s signing was at the Tulalip Boys & Girls Club where he learned to play.
Battle played three games on M-P’s freshman team before moving up to varsity. His junior year he averaged 21.4 points and eight rebounds per game, leading M-P to a 19-5 record and its first Northwest District title since 1993. Battle is believed to be the first from the Tulalip Tribes to receive a Division I basketball scholarship.
The wrestling team also looks strong with the return of junior Cayden White, who was All-Wesco last year at 170 pounds. M-P also has Isiah Galindo, who also was fifth at state, and Austin Davis, who went to state but did not place. Heavyweight Jeff Roullier also returns.
The only all-league swimmer returning is from M-P, junior Ian Meetsma in the 500 freestyle.
But coach Meredith Jenks said she has lots of swimmers returning for her combined MG-M-P team, but few newcomers.
One freshman she is high on is Seth Little for the Tomahawks. The team’s top diver also is back in M-P’s Andrew Kallio. For MG, top returnees are Nick Carlson, Jesse Nahinu and Leif Anderson.
