MARYSVILLE — The Tommies suffered two losses in one night.
On a night where Marysville-Pilchuck was looking to solidify its playoff position and get a little payback from a loss earlier in the year, the Lady Tomahawks came away with a loss and an injury Jan 26.
“When you lose the player that controls the floor for you, that is really hard to deal with,” said M-P coach Julie Martin after her girls lost 50-46 in Wesco North action.
In the second quarter, senior guard Andi Adams went down with a knee injury and the Lady Tomahawks had to figure out how to play without her.
A pair of freshmen, Charlee Pilon and Amanda Klep, responded by pressuring fullcourt and increasing the pace of play on offense to get Arlington’s half-court centered team out of sorts.
“Charlee and Amanda came out and just played scrappy on defense,” said Martin. “They didn’t look like freshmen out there.”
The plan worked and M-P took a 41-39 lead — it’s first lead since the first quarter — with four minutes remaining in the game. With a couple of injuries, however, M-P couldn’t maintain its pace and ended up succumbing to a half court style of play and Arlington’s posts that managed eight blocks.
“Our plan was to keep sending people in and keep fresh while we ran,” said Martin. “We just didn’t have enough fresh legs.”
Still, with all of the injuries, M-P never trailed by less than six.
“I thought they did a great job in the first half and stayed in the game,” said Martin.
Leading the Tommies in scoring was junior Emily Enberg, who scored a game-high 15 points, while Morgan Martinis added 13.
The Tommies play a home game against Lake Stevens Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
