MARYSVILLE — The Marysville-Pilchuck girls golf team continued its undefeated and league-leading record with a victory in the final league match, May 5, and are looking forward to the conference, districts and state championships.

“Right now our goal is to win as a team at the Conference Championship, which we should if you look at our numbers,” said coach Jaci LeGore Hodgins. “We have the most girls ranked with the highest amount of points.”

As of May 5, all six of M-P’s girls varsity golfers are ranked in the Top 20 of the Wesco North League. Abby Beauchamp is ranked second with 134 points, Kelsey Colmore is seventh with 118 points, Courtney Burdett is ninth with 114 points, Stephanie English is 10th with 113 points, Sarah Newland is 14th with 97 points and Ashley Tande is 16th with 77.

Beauchamp, Colmore and Burdett are all seniors who have played all four years of golf at Marysville-Pilchuck.

“Abby has been playing since she was 9 years old and has played Washington State Junior Golf her sophomore and junior seasons,” said LeGore Hodgins. “Courtney and Kelsey are athletic girls who have greatly improved their games and are having great senior seasons.”

With a mix of experience and youth, LeGore Hodgins credits three things with making the team so good — a combination of confidence, golf experience, and determination.

“We have six strong leaders,” said LeGore Hodgins. “They know has to stay cool and that’s a big part of golf. You don’t panic and you manage your game one shot at a time.”

After the Conference Championships are the District Championships from which the top 14 golfers move on to the State Championships.

“We have a reputation of being a strong team,” said LeGore Hodgins. “In the mid-2000s we had three girls qualify for state but that hasn’t happened since 2005., so we’ve gone since years without that happening.”

She pointed out that in the past couple of years M-P had two girls qualify for state every year, “so our goal is to get three or four girls to state this year.”

Another goal for the team is to have their No. 1 player, Beauchamp, make it into the second round at state.

“Abby has always played in the first round but hasn’t made the cut,” said LeGore Hodgins. “Last year she missed the cut by one stroke so we’re working toward ensuring Abby makes the cut and plays in the second round of state, that would be a real victory.”

But whatever happens, the coach is thankful for having such a great group of girls on the team.

“It’s just such a wonderful group of people,” said LeGore Hodgins. “We are blessed to have such a strong connection, it is really special.”
