MOUNTLAKE TERRACE The Tomahawk girls golf team hadnt played in competition since March 29, so to follow spring break with three consecutive matches April 9-11 had to be a daunting task of focus.
After a career- and team-high 20-point performance in competition at Arlington, freshman Stasia Ashley played in the No. 1 position for Marysville April 9 at Mountlake Terrace. Ashley followed up her revelatory game with a 14-point performance, tying her for second with sophomore teammate Brielle Saunders. On what head coach Jaci Legore Hodgins called a challenging day for us, sophomore Taylor Ashton had a team-high 16 points that day, helping the Tomahawk girls assemble a second place team finish behind Edmonds-Woodway but ahead of Mountlake Terrace and Meadowdale.
Just a trio of teams met in Stanwood April 10, and once again the M-P girls placed second. A dominant Snohomish team won the meet as their six golfers put together a 119-point team score.
Just to give you an idea of how high they score, their first-place girl and medalist scored 29 points Emily Guthrie, Legore Hodgins said later, describing medalist Guthrie as the player with the meets best score. Their lowest score was 19 points.
The Tomahawks best golfer that day, junior Tierany Winston, had a 16-point game. Sophomore Sara Rott finished second for M-P with 14 points and Saunders had 13 as the M-P girls finished with 62 team points and Stanwood placed third with 51.
Finally, April 11, Oak Harbor hosted five teams at the Whidbey Golf and Country Club. After 13 holes, Rott led her teammates with a 24-point game. Ashley was close behind with 22 points and Saunders with 20 on the way to 91 team points. Marysville finished third to Oak Harbor and rival Lake Stevens. Stanwood and Arlington finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Our league group is made up of Oak Harbor, who has won the last two league matches because their No. 1 and No. 2 girls are very talented golfers. Second was Lake Stevens, who continues to improve, Legore Hodgins said, adding, It was a big deal to come back from spring break and have three matches in a row. I am very proud of how our team handled it.
