EVERETT – Marysville-Pilchuck and Marysville Getchell both are still in the hunt to go to state after going 1-1 on the first day of the 3A District 1 Softball Tournament at Phil Johnson Fields Tuesday.
Arlington lost both of its games to be eliminated.
The sixth-seeded Eagles dominated in the early going in the first round, taking a 6-0 lead over third-seeded Everett. The Seagulls cut into the lead but still trailed 6-2 in the seventh inning.
With one out and two runners aboard, an error after a hit led to Everett clearing the bases to make it 6-5. A single up the middle, followed by a double to left, tied the game. Another single with the runner safe at the plate ended the game with the Eagles suffering the heart-breaking loss.
Arlington couldn’t recover. In the following game against seventh-seed Edmonds-Woodway, E-W won easily 15-3.
In another first-round game, M-P beat MG 4-3.
The fourth-seeded Chargers had plenty of chances to win. They loaded the bases after a walk and two errors in the bottom of the seventh inning. But M-P got the first out on a play at the plate, and ended the game with a home to first double play.
They had another chance in the fifth inning. Trailing 4-2, after a double, Brionna Palm hit an RBI single to cut the lead to one. But after a single by Emily Petermeyer M-P got the third out, stranding two more runners.
Earlier, they stranded three runners after Shannon Patton rocketed a single to center, a double to right and an intentional walk with two out. But a pop-up ended the inning.
In the second inning, with the score tied 2-2, MG had another opportunity but Palm was thrown out at the plate.
M-P scored the winning runs in the top of the third when sophomore Cassidy Phelps singled to right, stole second and scored on a double to left-center by junior Alissa Edge. Freshman Grace Davis then doubled up the middle to plate Edge.
Freshman Emily Downing was the winning pitcher. Palm took the loss.
MG recovered in the later game, beating Shorewood 5-3. M-P, however, fell to Meadowdale 7-3.
Both play Thursday at 4:30 p.m. with the winner going to state, the loser going home.
M-P plays E-W, while MG takes on Everett. The winners play again at 6:30 for third and fourth place.
