STANWOOD — Looking fresher and more composed in their second week, the Tomahawk girls soccer team hit a benchmark this season in their Sept. 16 loss at Stanwood.
Thanks to sophomore midfielder Kiley Thomason, the M-P girls have their first goal of the season under their belts.
Although the Tomahawks had several opportunities to add another goal to their tally, several near misses went off the top bar of the Stanwood goal. Sophomore forward Danielle Norton had a frustrating miss in the 13th minute that would have given Marysville their first goal and first lead of the season. But despite the miss, the fact that the team was able to threaten the goal gave the girls confidence, according to their coach.
The first goal of the game, however, was Stanwood’s. Senior forward Megan Douwes found the Tomahawk net about nine minutes later to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. By halftime, Stanwood had extended their lead to two.
Not long into the second half, Thomason scored her own goal.
Thanks to several saves by sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Schoonover, M-P was able to claim a shutout for the second half. They were unable, though, to find the tying goal.
“We won our first half of soccer,” Tomahawk coach Geoff Kittle said afterward. He hopes to see the team learn to read plays better and continue to work on their passing.
“I think we’re fighting mental toughness,” he added. “We had a confidence issue after that first (Stanwood) goal.”
