ARLINGTON — Seniors were out in force on both sides of the net when Marysville-Pilchuck volleyball visited Arlington on the Eagles’ Senior Night.

Tomahawk coach Shelly Johnson’s squad featured seven seniors compared to Arlington’s six, and it made all the difference in the Tomahawks’ 3-0 sweep.

Setters RaeAnn Bobadilla and Lexi Fitzmaurice, outside hitters Summer Cull, Kayla Ames, Hannah Watson and Lindsey Hartelroad, middle back Jessica Boyle made themselves at home and overloaded the Eagles’ senior power with their own.

“They’re such a nice group of kids,” Johnson said. “There’s usually a sourpuss on every team, but not on this one.”

The Tomahawks showed more hustle on offense, starting game 1 with a 13-4 lead and forcing Arlington to call timeout. The Eagles rallied to within three at 23-20, but M-P forced Arlington turnovers and closed the game out, 25-20.

The Tomahawks led 17-15 in game 2 before scoring six straight points and taking the game 25-20.

The Tomahawks shouted, “1-2-3 solid,” eager to close out the match coming out of a timeout in game 3.

The Tomahawks constantly kept the ball alive to score easy points off of Arlington’s miscues. The teams fought to ties of 9-9 and 11-11 before M-P led 22-19.

But the Eagles would not die.

Arlington made a statement by reeling off three straight points, including a long exchange in which neither team would let the ball hit the ground, to fire up the crowd and electrify the Arlington gym, but the Tomahawks answered with three straight points of their own to put their division rivals away.

“I had expectations of them and they didn’t want to disappoint,” Johnson said. “I’m so impressed with the team’s improvement — Jessica Boyle’s confidence grew over the season and made a big difference tonight.”

Hannah Watson was a threat on offense and defense, tallying 11 digs and 10 kills. Junior libero Hailey Bramer kept the Tomahawk juggernaut running with 23 digs to keep the Eagles under pressure all night.
