MARYSVILLE — The Tomahawks wasted no time Dec. 3 against Squalicum, posting four state-qualifying times in just their first meet.

“That’s unusual, for sure,” said Marysville-Pilchuck coach Scott Knowles after the 138-48 Tomahawks win. “You don’t usually know what to expect in the first meet, but there were a couple of seniors in those times.”

Finishing with individual state times were Oliver Durand in the 100-yard backstroke (55.85) and the 100-yard butterfly (54.77) and Spencer Girard in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.46). The two racers were also the first legs of the qualifying 200-yard medley relay, along with Josh Estella and Brandon Caldwell at a time of 1:44.01.

Other winners included Andrew Winquist in the 200 freestyle (2:00.12), Estella in the 200 individual medley (2:14.79), Brandon Caldwell in the 50 freestyle (24.08), Zach Russell in diving (217.90) and Girard in the 100 freestyle (51.50). Each of the individuals swam a district qualifying time.

“There were just good swims all around,” Knowles said. “Josh Estrella had a really good go in the medley and Andrew Windquist and Drew Preston each qualified for a couple of district events.”

The Tomahawks are coming off a seventh-place finish in the Class 4A state tournament in 2009.
