Marysville diver breaks 21-year-old record

Swimming

Andrew Kallio broke a 21-year-old record at Marysville-Pilchuck High School in diving with 289.85 points, and teammate Ian Meetsma and Andrew Christensen of MG already have qualified for districts. Meetsma qualified in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, .1 second and 100 butterfly in 59.39 seconds and Christensen in the 500 free in 5:57.16. As a team, M-P beat Archbishop Murphy 93-57, and MG beat ABM 71-61. Also, Hunter Brown of MG won the 50 free, Kameron Wilkes of MG the 100 free, and Jayden Boyle of M-P the 100 breast. Tuesday, M-P lost to Lake Stevens 144-30 and MG fell to the Vikings 152-26. Meetsma was the only winner in the 50 free with a time of 23.79 seconds. Placing second were: M-P in the 200 relay, Kallio in diving, Meetsma in the 100 free and Christensen in the 500 free.

Boys wrestling

The M-P boys are off to a great start, led by Cayden White, Austin Davis and Justin Albee. The Tommies were fifth in a meet at Puyallup. Davis tied for third at 132 pounds; White won at 182 pounds; at 220 pounds Michael McPherson tied for third; and at 285 pounds Albee was second. At the Edmonds-Woodway tourney, Davis was second, White first and Albee fifth. The Tomahawks beat Jackson 51-30. Earning pins were: Preston Phillips, Ammar Humoud, White, Davis, Darren Johnston-Jones and Albee. M-P also beat Cascade 54-42 with Davis, Humoud, Andon Merrick, Iakov Bonder, Douglas Cruz-Young, White, Kamiakin Craig and Albee getting pins.

MG wrestlers won their four matches. They beat Cedarcrest 54-25. Getting pins for the winners were Jacob Steele, T.J. Schweitzberger, John Allen, Cody Mitchell, Chris Bonner and Cheron Smith. The Chargers also beat Lynnwood 57-15. Getting pins were Anatoliy Bay, Caleb Blonk, Erick Duenes, Igor Shabalov, Schweitzberger and Bonner. Wednesday, MG beat Shorecrest 48-30 and Squalicum 57-24. Getting pins in the first match were: Steele, Mitchell, Bay and Blonk. In the second match, getting pins were: Steele, Taylor Herridge, Joel Foster, Schwietzberger, Landen Weil, Jesus Cabadas, Bonner, Duenes and Omar Salcedo.

Girls wrestling

The Tommies lost to Everett 60-18. Kaitlan Flick won by pin, as did Chelsey Goeden and Alivia White. White also took first place at a tourney in Yelm. At Everett, White, only a freshman, won at 190 pounds, beating two previous state champions. For her efforts, White was a state WIAA athlete of the week selection. She also was a cheerleader at the boys and girls basketball games.

Boys basketball

M-P got by Jackson 67-58. Cameron Stordahl led the way with 28 points. Aaron Kalab added 11 and Ethan Jackson 10. The Tommies lost a close one to Mercer Island 58-56. Stordahl scored 20 and Kalab 12 for the losing team. M-P also beat Bothell 75-61. Wednesday, M-P trounced Lynnwood 89-54. Luke Dobler had 22, Stordahl 20 and Jackson 17.

MG fell to Kamiak 74-53. Malakhi Knight scored 32 for the losing team. Alex Owens contributed 15. But the Chargers beat Sehome 63-40. MG also beat Lakewood 66-61. Wednesday, MG lost to Shorecrest 66-37. Knight had 12 and Owens 11.

Girls basketball

MG beat Sehome 48-40 with Ellie Jackson scoring 16, Maddy Grandbois 13 and Madison Hagglund 10. MG fell to Mount Vernon 35-30. MG also lost to Bellingham 45-38 with Grandbois getting 15. Tuesday, the Chargers lost to Shorecrest 32-24. Grandbois had 8 for the losers.

M-P got by Cascade 41-38. Madyson Baxter tallied 13 and Lauren Lewis 11. M-P lost to Oak Harbor 53-25. Tuesday, the Tommies, led by Alissa Edge with 10, were clobbered by Lynnwood 69-28.

ARLINGTON

Boys wrestling

The Eagles are looking like a powerhouse early in the season. At the Arlington Throwdown, the Eagles placed fifth. Kevin McKinley was second at 106 pounds; Dorian Tollenaar first at 120 and Kane Odenius tied for fifth; Jonathan Cerna-Galindo tied for fifth at 126; Cole Phillips tied for third and Gunner Olson tied for fifth at 132; Trevor Latta tied for third at 145; and at 285 Hunter Strande tied for third. Arlington beat Cedarcrest 48-36. Getting pins for the Eagles were: Eric Vogel, Carsten Tollenaar, Latta, Rylan Polkinghorn and Gabriel Vickers. At the Edmonds-Woodway tourney, D. Tollenaar was second and C. Tollenaar fifth at 120 pounds. Arlington also beat Kamiak 51-30. Earning pins were A.J. Dorchak, D. Tollenaar, C. Tollenaar, David Forslof, Latta, Dimitri Shaffer, Polkinghorn and Strande.

Girls wrestling

At Everett, the girls were sixth. Kate Rosson tied for third at 125; Tailer Cochran was second at 130; and Alyson Ellingson placed second at 235. The Eagles also beat Cascade-Jackson 66-18 and Lake Stevens 54-36. Wednesday, Arlington beat the combined Marysville teams 60-18 and the combined Snohomish/Glacier Peak team 66-18.

Girls basketball

The Eagles are off to a fast start. They beat Oak Harbor 63-16 with Keira Marsh getting 15 points and Sierra Scheppele 12. They also whipped Anacortes 61-14. Marsh had 25 and Scheppele 11. Arlington also beat Seattle Prep 71-38. Hailey Hiatt had 20 and Scheppele 11. They beat Burlington-Edison 57-46. Marsh had 17 and Hiatt 10. Their only loss was to Lake Stevens 57-54. Marsh had 16 and Hiatt 15. Tuesday, the Eagles beat Cedarcrest 67-44. Marsh had 16, Josie Stupey 11 and Jenna Villa 11.

Boys basketball

The Eagles whipped Sedro-Woolley 58-25. But they lost a heart-breaker to Monroe 53-52. Ethan Martin and Joseph Schmidt scored 12 each to lead Arlington. The boys beat Anacortes 56-51. They lost to Ferndale 71-54 with Martin getting 15 and Schmidt 11. Arlington beat Sehome 68-58. Martin led with 20, followed by Schmidt and Ryan Brown with 14 apiece. Wednesday, Arlington lost to Cedarcrest 56-46. Brown scored 15.

Youth football

In his sixth season, quarterback-running back Braydin Hooper of Arlington led his team to the NCYFL championship, scoring over 15 touchdowns. As a result, he was named to play in a regional championship series, where he scored three TDs. He was then named to play in the All-American Bowl in San Diego in February.

LAKEWOOD

Fall sports

Dan Teeter was coach of the year and quarterback Jared Taylor co-MVP of the All-Northwest 2A football team. Also honored was running back Landen Pruitt, junior receiver Carson Chrisman, junior lineman Keegan Bach, defensive linemen Brandt Starkey and sophomore Jakobus Seth, and Chrisman again as a defensive back. On the second team was RB Malik Dotson, OL junior Josh Thuringer, kicker Alan Sepulveda, DL sophomore Jayden Riley, linebacker Riley Krueger and DB Pruitt.

In other sports, Alex Jensen earned first-team all-conference in boys cross country and junior Gabe Hatch garnered second-team honors. Callie Buchanan and Madison Howe both earned second-team spots in girls cross country. Forward Iliana Ramirez was a second-team selection in girls soccer. And Ben VanderWeyst was a second-team pick in boys tennis.

Boys basketball

The Cougars lost a tough one to King’s 59-56. Morgan Stacey led the way with 24, with Alex Jensen getting 11 and Blake Conyers 10. They whipped Sultan 66-18 with Jensen getting 14, Stacey 11, Jackson Schultz 10 and Kaiden Harrison 10. They beat Stanwood 82-76 with Shae Dixon getting 23, Jensen 20, Schultz 16 and Jared Taylor 10. Tuesday, the Cougars won a thriller against Meridian 52-51, coming back from four-points down in the last period. Stacey’s steal and layup with 8 seconds left was the difference. He had 11 and Dixon 10.

Girls basketball

The Cougars lost to Cascade 37-23 with Mandy Harrison getting 9 points for the losing team. They also lost to Lakeside 57-13. They beat M-P 22-20 with Jasmine Graham getting 8. Lauren Lewis and Kelsey Edge scored 6 each for the losers.

Girls wrestling

At a tourney in Everett, Torrie Blackwood tied for third at 120 pounds.
