MARYSVILLE — A well-rounded quartet of girls helped bring home a Tulalip 3-on-3 championship to Marysville.

The team of Shelby Beyer, Emily Enberg, Dacia Heckendorf and Morgan Martinis — three juniors- and a sophomore-to-be at Marysville-Pilchuck this fall — won the high school girls division at the Aug. 8-9 basketball tournament at the Tulalip Resort Casino.

Solid outside shooting by Martinis and Beyer along with good defense and interior presence by Enberg and Heckendorf helped the girls go through their bracket undefeated, topping the KSK Fighters from the Lynnwood-Mukilteo area in the championship, 16-14. Although the girls struggled a little with free-throw shooting during their championship game Aug. 9, Martinis, a steady three-point shooter on the varsity basketball team in the winter, had some key shots from similar range to keep the girls about three points comfortably ahead.

It was the third year for the nucleus of players to compete in the local tournament. Team dad and coach Marty Martinis said this was the girls’ second championship, with a runner-up finish in their other tournament run.

“Everybody on this team had a role,” he said. “They’ve got good chemistry from playing as a team.”

This year, the girls were undefeated through four games.

The Tulalip 3-on-3 Extravaganza is western Washington’s largest such basketball tournament and second only in the state to Spokane’s behemoth Hoopfest, which took place earlier this summer. Sponsored by the Tulalip Resort Casino, all money raised by the tournament benefits the Boys and Girls Club, said organizer Charlie Cobb.

‘They’re growing to Vegas-size and they still sponsor us,” Cobb said gratefully as the tournament came to a close.

In the tournament’s sixth year, turnout continued to slip a little from previous years, likely due to economic reasons, but still mustered about 150 teams, including one as far away as Lapwai, Idaho.
