EVERETT — Pins must be contagious.

That seems to be the case with Marysville-Pilchuck’s wrestling team, which stayed undefeated by demolishing Cascade 70-9, Dec. 16, in a Wesco North match.

“We’re excited to see them build on each other,” said M-P coach Craig Iversen, whose boys recorded eight pins in the win. “When they see one guy get a pin, the others want to get them too.”

The Tommies’ first pin came from an unlikely source, as sophomore Jamie Siko came up from junior varsity to take down his opponent in the second period of the 125-pound match.

“Siko was huge for us,” said Iversen. “We’ve had some guys go down with sickness recently and to have him come up and get a pin in his first varsity match really started us off.”

The meet began at 125 pounds, and by the end of the 135-pound match, the Tommies had an 18-0 lead off pins from Christian Mendoza (23 seconds) and Brandon Blevins (1:22).

Cascade halved M-P’s lead at 18-9, but it was all Tommies from there as Iversen’s boys either took a forfeit or pinned their way to victory. Senior Marcus Haughian was next, pinning 189-pound opponent Cody Johnson in 20 seconds. He was followed by Skylar Hatch, who pinned 215-pound opponent Tre’ Ferebe in 35 seconds, and finally Thomas Hoeper, who pinned his heavyweight opponent, Sabah Shrinzada in 5:49.

“When I saw the other guys get pins and do their job, I had to do mine,” said 119-pound senior Tanner Daurie, who finished the meet with a pin of Wyatt Larsen in 2:12 seconds after trailing 4-3 at the end of the first period. “I saw that I was down early and I had to get the pin.”

Also getting a pin was Luis Cardona, who pinned his 112-pound opponent, Amanda Redford, in 24 seconds.

M-P goes into winter break with a 4-0 record, which Iversen partly attributes to having a set lineup.

“It’s something that almost every program has trouble with, but as long as we stay healthy, we have the right guys in the right places,” he said. “But we’ve still got the bulk of the league to face after the holidays and we’re concentrated on that.”

After the holidays, the Tomahawks come back with conference matches against Arlington, Burlington-Edison and Snohomish before the annual MP Premier on Jan 15.
