ARLINGTON — It was the little things that did in the Marysville American All-Stars in July 6.

Falling 10-5 in a loser-out contest to South Everett, the Marysville majors fought to comeback from an early deficit, but the game ultimately slipped away.

“It’s just the things that you practice every day that sometimes don’t go right and then it starts to snowball,” said majors manager Kyle Swenson.

Marysville was down 6-1 after the second inning, but fought back with a pair of runs, which were highlighted by Tristen Southard’s monster home run to right-center field.

“That kid is a monster,” said Swenson. “He’s got great hips that he drives on every swing.”

The round-tripper was the second of the tournament for Southard.

But Mill Creek came back to score four more runs in the next two innings, making the score 10-4 and bought another day as a team.

Marysville American, on the other hand, is finished, but not without incident, as they made waves in the first couple tournament games at Quake Fields in Arlington. The majors started off with a 10-0 win over Granite Falls behind opportunistic defense and stingy pitching.

It was their second-round game against crosstown rival Marysville National, however, that gave Marysville American life in an 8-7 win.

“After that game, we knew that we could beat anybody in this tournament because National was a really good team,” Swenson said. “They had some big hitters that we weren’t a little worried about, but we were able to hold them off.”

Swenson’s most prevalent memory of the tournament came in that game in the form of Ryker Alskog’s two-run homer that put American up 7-6 in the game.

Swenson also recalled the pitching of Alex Aumick.

“He’s a dynamite pitcher that is just going to keep improving,” Swenson said. “He has gone such a long way in just these two weeks.”

As a whole, though, Swenson couldn’t say enough about his team’s character.

“This is the most supportive team I’ve ever coached,” he said. “Everybody just had everybody else’s back. I’ve coached teams before where if something went wrong, they just let it get to them, but these guys really cared about winning the right way.”

Marysville American is composed of Josh Abrahamson, Alskog, Aumick, Aahron Coats, Kamerin Furseth, Nate Heckendorf, Hunter Johnson, Kyle Korte, Erik Lind, Collin Mahoney, Austin Richbourg, Southard and Jacob Weiderstrom.
