EVERETT — The Tommies fell victim to stellar pitching again in the 4A District 1 baseball tournament.

The 7-0 loss to Shorewood marked the end of the season for Marysville-Pilchuck at Everett Memorial Stadium.

“None of us really expected this. I know I didn’t,” said M-P manager Kurt Koshelnik.

The Tommies entered the postseason with an 15-1 record and were ranked as high as No. 2 in the state by the Associated Press, but their bats went quiet after an opening round win against Stanwood.

In their final game May 12, a loser-out contest against Shorewood, the Tommies went hitless in the first four innings, while the Thunderbirds built a 6-0 lead.

“This was the best pitching we’ve seen all year,” said Koshelnik. “It’s just adding to the debate of whether the (Wesco) North or South is better this year.”

The Wesco North won’t be represented at the state level this year, with both M-P and Lake Stevens, North division co-champions, were dispatched by Shorewood, which seemed to have overwhelming pitching. The final scored ended up being 7-0.

This was a surprise for M-P, which had thoughts of going further into the playoffs than the 2009 team that lost in the state regionals.

After the game, the Tommies filed out of the dugout at Everett Memorial Stadium quiet in what seemed like trying to collectively process what just happened.

“I think they’ll be fine,” Koshelnik said. “They’ll all keep playing baseball this summer and move on to what’s next.”

Koshelnik said that he will miss this year’s group of 13 seniors that powered this team to the District 1 tournament.

“They set the tone in what we thought was a strength for us, which was hitting,” he said. “They’re a good group of guys that can get a little rowdy, but just a really fun bunch.”
