ARLINGTON — Any teams who were planning to look past the Tomahawk girls soccer team this fall should reconsider that strategy.

Just ask Lake Stevens or Arlington, two district tournament teams last year who trailed the two-win Marysville-Pilchuck girls in the Wesco North standings after a 3-0 win over the Eagles Sept. 10.

With as many wins now as they had all last season, the Tomahawk girls are turning in big plays before they’ve even played their first home game. Sophomore midfielder Lauren Noltes scored twice, including the game-winning goal against league favorite Lake Stevens, giving M-P a 3-2 win in overtime. She added another goal against Arlington in the 70th minute, rebounding a Kayla Thistle attempt blocked by all-league Arlington keeper Chelsea Boulton.

Noltes’ goal against Arlington put Marysville-Pilchuck up 2-0 after an early goal by junior Melissa Kirk broke the stalemate.

Senior Kiely Cordon also scored a goal in the 75th minute.

“We’re just playing like we play,” said M-P coach Gary Riozzi. “We’re sticking to basics. That’s just working hard and belief.”

He added that Noltes, who played on the junior varsity team he coached last year, had benefited from being an unknown in the league. Some of the goals she has made in the young season have caught opposing players off guard and they’ll adjust to her.

But her style of play is typical of how Riozzi described his team’s ethic.

“She works hard, she doen’t give up and makes those hard runs in the middle,” he added.

Junior goalkeeper Lauren Schoonover recorded the shutout for Marysville-Pilchuck.
