Marysville-Pilchuck graduate Levi Cartas was drafted in the 35th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Kansas City Royals.
With the pick June 11, Cartas became the most recent Tomahawk drafted since M-P alum Nick Haughian was drafted out of the University of Washington last year by the Baltimore Orioles.
In 2005, first baseman Josh Short was drafted as an outfielder by the Florida Marlins in the 37th round, the last Tomahawk to be drafted out of high school.
“Over the years, we’ve had quite a few kids drafted, I don’t know how many. We’ve had a few in the 30s rounds,” said Marysville athletic director Greg Erickson.
Cartas has several options before him. He could sign a contract with the Royals and would probably end up playing on a minor league team affiliated with the Royals. Or he could play college baseball and take his chances in a future draft.
“A lot of times, high school kids go on to college and they get drafted again and again. It depends on their goals,” Erickson added, who credited Cartas’ speed as a factor in the right fielder’s favor.
Cartas also played wide receiver on the 9-0 Tomahawk football team.
