OAK HARBOR — Abby Beauchamp and Stasia Ashley know what a state tournament looks like.
Last year, Beauchamp earned a trip as an alternate, while Ashley came along for support, and to prepare for next year.
“They both got hungry after last year,” said Marysville-Pilchuck coach Jaci LeGore Hodgins. “That was their goal, to get back there this year.”
This year, the two will know what it’s like to have a teammate playing alongside as Beauchamp finished eighth with a score of 97-95-192 during the District 1 Tournament at Gallary Golf Course while Ashley finished in ninth with a score of 97-97-194. The top 14 earned a spot to state, while No. 15 was an alternate.
“Gallery is a tough course and both girls played the best they have ever played here,” LeGore Hodgins said.
The two led the Tomahawks to a fourth-place finish at the district tourney, which is an accomplishment, but LeGore Hodgins said they were expecting more.
“It is a disappointment because we could smell how fun it would have been (to be district champs),” she said. “But we struggled on the last day.”
Going into the tournament, M-P was thought of as a candidtate to win the title, coming off a performance at divisionals that earned them a co-champion trophy with Everett.
Although LeGore-Hogins said there was a letdown at districts, she was still impressed by her players’ skill this season, and is anticipating their return next season.
“We get them all back, except one, so we’re really excited about the possibilities next year,” she said.
Until then, however, Beauchamp and Ashley headed to Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco for the state tournament, May 25 and 26.
MIZELL TO GO TO STATE
Lakewood’s Kayley Mizell finished inside the top 20 at the 2A District 1 tournament at Snohomish Golf and Country Club, May 17 and 18, earning a trip to the 2A state tournament at Apple Tree Golf Resort in Yakima May 25 and 26.
GRACE SENDS A PAIR
Grace Academy senior Jeffery Jorgensen finished 11th at the tri-district tournament May 12 with a score of 45-48-93, earning him a trip to the 1B/2B state tournament at the Tri-City Country Club in Kennewick. The top 19 boys earned a state berth.
Lady Eagles sophomore Kendall Likes shot a 52-57-109 to earn a trip to the girls state tournament. Likes finished fifth with the top eight girls moving on to Kennewick.
