MARYSVILLE — The Tomahawks (3-0) remained undefeated Dec. 10 with a 106-80 win at home against Shorecrest.

“There was some good and some bad today,” said Marysville-Pilchuck coach Scott Knowles.

The good, represented by five individual and three relay winners of the 12 varsity events, was highlighted by Spencer Gerard and Olver Durand, each winning a pair of events.

“Oliver and Spencer each had some pretty good races,” Knowles said.

Garard, a junior, claimed first with district-qualifying times in the 100-yard butterfly (59.08) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.85) races, while Durand, a senior, score a state-qualifying time in the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.72) and a district time in the 100-yard breast stroke (1:04.80).

Also putting in his best was senior diver Zach Russell, who scored a 221.55 and placing first.

“He put up some high numbers, and he should — he was a state placer last year,” Knowles said.

In both the good and the bad columns were the relays. The most notable race was the 400-yard freestyle relay, which came down a hundredth of a second, with the M-P team of Robbie Haynes, Riley Drabb, Andrew Winquist and Girard in first place with a time of 3:44.96. The Tomahawks also won the 200 medley relay (Josh Estella, Brandon Caldwell, Durand, Jason Pusateri) in 1:46.88 and the 200 freestyle relay (Durand, Pusateri, Girardd, Caldwell) in 1:34.27.

While scoring wins in all three relays, Knowles said there is still a lot of work to be done both in who is swimming in them and their technique.

“Relay exchanges is something we’re going to be working on tomorrow,” he said. “They’re waiting until the guy touches, and then thinking about going.”
