Marysville-Pilchuck boys golf rebounding from slow start

EVERETT — The Tommies golf team couldn’t recoup from a rocky start.

In a Wesco North match against Arlington and Everett, the Tomahawks scored 436 points to finish in the middle.

“We’re not quite playing up to our ability yet,” said M-P coach Mike Otness. “We had three 93’s and that’s just not going to be competitive in any Wesco match. We have to get guys to shoot lower.”

Marysville-Pilchuck was led by senior Brandon Caldwell, who was five over after the first five holes and couldn’t quite make up for it.

“Brandon got off to a slow start,” Otness said. “And we know he’s able to shoot much better, it’s just getting out there and getting everybody playing back to their ability.”

The pace was slow at Legion Memorial Golf Course, and Otness said that makes it more difficult to rally from a slow start.

“To maintain your focus and concentration when the play is that slow is really difficult,” he said. “You’ve got more time to think about each shot and how you could have done better instead of just going out and playing through.”

Caldwell (42-40 82) was followed by David Fugate (41-42 83) and Cory Hunt (42-43 85).

While not off to the start Otness would have preferred this spring, he is not at all concerned with his team’s play after just a handful of matches.

“It’s still really early and after just a few matches we’re just not quite there, but the ability is and we’re just going to continue to do what we’ve been doing and it will come together,” Otness said.
