Marysville sweeps singles play en route to .500 record

MARYSVILLE — In what’s becoming a more frequent result, the Marysville-Pilchuck girls took it to Monroe, April 16, for a 5-2 Wesco North victory.

Coach Nathan McClellan is pleased with the result of the Tommies’ first half of the season, as they evened their record at 4-4.

“I’m happy with the way we’re playing,” he said. “We’ve had our ups and downs, our close matches, but it’s good to finish the first round even.”

The win against Monroe was Marysville’s fourth of the season, matching the total number of team victories it had at the end of the year in 2009.

As has been the case for much of the season, the singles matches played a large part in M-P’s win, starting with No. 1 Sarah Tuemmler, who defeated Brooke Winslow 6-1, 6-1.

“We knew she was going to be strong coming into this year,” said McClellan of Tuemmler, a sophomore who attends Highland Christian. “And she is everything we expected her to be. It really helps when you can go into a match knowing that you’ll have that ability to win at the top.”

M-P swept the singles play, with Courtney Coombs defeating Alli Breaker 6-2, 6-3 and Surie Vixaysakd defeating Stephanie Thiessen 6-0, 6-1 in the quickest match of the day.

Also winning was Tiffany Freeling.“She played really well and has sort of been able to bounce around for us this year and play in a spot whenever we need her,” he said.

Freeling defeated Belle Chan 6-3, 6-3.

“Our singles play has been pretty consistent for us,” McClellan said. “And our doubles play has treat athletes, but has room to improve for our second half.”

The winning doubles pairing for the Tommies came from Sasha Thomas and Karissa Loe, who defeated Hannah O’Mally and Shea Love with ease, 6-2, 6-1.
