MARYSVILLE — Green and gold is back.

The Marysville School Board voted to reinstate  Marysville Getchell varsity sports beginning in the fall of 2011 instead of a year later.

The decision came in the board’s regular session Feb. 22.

“Thanks to many cost saving steps and lots of meetings with parents, the net cost to start up the Marysville Getchell varsity program was cut in half,” said Dr. Larry Nyland, district superintendent.

It reversed a decision, made Jan. 10, that counteracted a severe shortfall projection of $2 million in this year’s budget stemming from statewide budget cuts in addition to another projection of a more than $2 million shortfall for the next year.

The new decision will still cut Marysville Getchell ‘C’ teams this spring, while eliminating seventh-grade team sports with the exception of volleyball.

The previous decision was based on the Getchell program’s projected need of $576,000 in startup costs, but Nyland said those costs have since been cut. Also helping aid the new decision was a better mid-year enrollment than expected, a more forgiving budgetary forecast and savings from reductions already made in the district’s budget.

The previous decision was met with resistance from the community as the district set the fall of 2011 has the startup date two years ago.
