MARYSVILLE — The Tomahawk soccer team has used the season’s games to fine-tune their skills and emerged victorious in an early season test.

Marysville-Pilchuck defeated Oak Harbor 5-1 in a March 24 game at Quil Ceda Stadium.

“We’re starting to settle the ball and play possession style well,” M-P coach Geoff Kittle said after the league game.

Senior Seth Jones scored what were effectively the game-winning goals for the Tomahawks in the fourth and 16th minutes of the game. Senior John Crenshaw and junior Brady Ballew were each credited with an assist for Jones’ goals. They would go on to add one of their own.

Ballew scored in the 20th minute, his fourth goal of the season, giving Marysville a 3-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

In the 65th minute, Oak Harbor ended the shutout with a kick just inside the right goalpost, but less than two minutes later, Tomahawk senior Kevin Chavez stole the ball from a Wildcat defender and took it to the net to give M-P a 4-1 lead.

An illegal tackle on Crenshaw with less than 14 minutes left to play earned the senior forward a penalty kick, on which he scored.

“John Crenshaw seems to be making an impact every game,” Kittle said. “He had a goal every game.”

Crenshaw added to that streak as the Tommies hosted Cascade March 27 in the first game this season of a fierce rivalry between the schools. The senior had a hat trick in front of a home crowd as M-P went on to win 4-2.

The Tomahawks are averaging about three goals per game thus far in the season.

Senior Kyle Bluhm has started in the goal for the Tomahawks. As of the Cascade game, the Tomahawks are 3-0-1, the only undefeated team in the young season. Marysville was scheduled to play Snohomish March 30 after The Globe went to press.
