MARYSVILLE — Without playing a game yet, the Tommies can say things about their 2011 softball that no other team in the Western Conference can say.

With six returning all-league players — three of whom were first-teamers — there is reason for Marysville-Pilchuck to be considered the favorite to win the Wesco North and more.

“I wouldn’t say we’re the favorite, but we’re a favorite,” said M-P coach KT Allyn.

The distinction might be small, but there is no confusion that M-P makes a strong case for leading the Wesco North as the Lady Tomahawks went 16-0 in conference play last year to earn that title with just one senior on the roster.

Now, with eight returning starters from last year’s squad, the Tommies will look to earn another state berth and come back home with a trophy as they got knocked out in a rain-shortened tournament in 2010.

“I’d say that everybody remembers what happened and we just want to get back there and have more success,” said Allyn.

Now the team goes from junior-heavy to senior-led, starting with pitcher Riley Fritz. The Tommies lost their second pitcher, but Sacha Clow, who is also a first-team outfielder, will take the mound at times.

“I’ve got two very competent pitchers,” said Allyn. “They are both just competitors and Sacha could pitch on any team in this league.”

Also coming back will be Katie Buck, whose versatility and bat earned her a first team consideration as a utility.

“That’s her strength,” said Allyn. “Katie will go to any position you ask her to with a positive attitude and be a factor.”

With so many options, Allyn said that M-P fans will see a number of different lineups during the season, as they have interchangeable parts offensively. Speaking of which, second-team first baseman Morgan Martinis returns to the middle of the order, as does honorable mention catcher Jessica Christiansen and shortstop Megan Rollings.

The Tommies begin Wesco North play March 23 at home against Lake Stevens.
