MARYSVILLE — The Tommies couldn’t keep up with the Knights in the second half of a non-conference matchup.

After taking an early 1-0 lead, Marysville-Pilchuck (6-2) suffered a 2-1 loss to Wesco North leading Kamiak (6-0) Sept. 28.

“We played well in the first half, I thought,” said M-P manager Gary Riozzi. “We moved the ball and held off their runs.”

Despite Kamiak controlling the ball early and a 5-2 edge in shots, Madison Schoonover put the Tommies ahead in the 33rd minute on an unlikely strike.

With her back to the goal, the Marysville senior forward received the ball nearly 18 yards away from the goal. Without facing the goal, she chipped the ball with her right foot over her left shoulder in sort of a half bicycle kick. The result of the shot left Schoonover falling to the ground while the ball sailed over Kamiak keeper Tana Foster, who leapt to punch it out of the far-post corner and missed.

With the score 1-0, M-P finished the half with two more scoring opportunities, but couldn’t extend the lead.

Kamiak came out firing in the second half, however, scoring the equalizer in the 56th minute from a counter attack that left M-P’s defense overcompensating to one side and a big cross left Knight’s Teryn Bence open.

“They increased the numbers they sent at us in the second half and attacked with deeper runs,” said Riozzi. “And we had a hard time with that.”

Kamiak went ahead four minutes later when Lauren Luke found the ball inside a cluster of players from both teams and got a shot off inside the 18.

The loss was the second of the year for the Tommies, who also lost to Cascade 1-0 Sept. 30 on an early goal to the Bruins.

With a 5-3 record (6-3 overall), the Tommies stand in second place in the conference behind Snohomish.
