MARYSVILLE – The weather may not seem like it, but it is time for spring sports at the high school level.
The only team that was able to practice Friday was the Marysville Getchell baseball team. And that’s because it was its turn to be in the batting cages on the Marysville-Pilchuck campus. The schools rotate days in the shed.
Coach Gabe Rochon said the Chargers will be led by centerfielder-pitcher senior Zac Townsend, who plans to play for Wenatchee Valley college next year.
“He’s a workhorse,” Rochon said. “He sets the example for the younger guys, taking them under his wing and telling them how to do things the right way.”
The coach said there were only six seniors last year, but leadership has not been a problem during the first week of practice.
“They are leaders. They have played together since Little League,” Rochon said. “They’re all back, and they all contributed last year.”
The coach also expects a big year from 6-foot-6 first baseman-pitcher Colton Bailey, who hit over .300 last year. He’s also an excellent defender, even though he just because a first baseman last year. “He’s like a shortstop at first base,” Rochon said.
The coach also is looking for a big year from third baseman-pitcher Gavin Cookson, who is up from the junior varsity team. He also likes the looks of freshman shortstop Matthew Card. “He’s impressed every day,” Rochon said.
Actually, the coach said the entire team has impressed him. “Every day they keep surprising me,” he said.
Rochon said as a whole the team won’t have the power it did last year, but it should be improved in all other areas because they know the game of baseball.
“We’ll be a better team. They know situational baseball. The pitching will be deeper, with eight guys,” he said.
The players want to be the best team MG has had in its five-year school history. “They want to be remembered forever,” Rochon said. “They attack every day like they have a chip on their shoulder.”
