SHORELINE — The Marysville Getchell girls basketball team lost 39-38 by Shorewood Feb. 15 in a 3A district loser-out game.
MG, down 39-30 in the fourth quarter, chipped away at Shorewood’s lead, putting together a run of eight points via a couple of layins and a 3-point goal by senior Jayden Noriega.
With about 17 seconds left in the game, MG coach Shannon Grandbois set up a play on the sideline during a timeout. Noriega got a good look and attempted a game-winning 3-pointer but the ball rimmed out.
MG entered the game without senior leader Gabby Grandbois, who sustained a knee injury in a first-round playoff loss to Snohomish 38-30 Feb. 10.
“We had to make a bit of an adjustment, and people had to step up,” coach Grandbois said.
Junior Oshinaye Taylor led MG with 12 points, and Noreiga added nine.
With MG finishing the season 12-10, it was the first time in its program’s five-year history the team finished above .500, Grandbois said she thinks the Chargers “did great.”
“We hit a lot of our goals,” she said. “I’m really excited for the future,” as they will only lose three seniors for next season.
