SEATTLE — Kassidy Millar will hope for a phone call in the next few days.

The 8-year-old from Marysville scored 660 points to earn top honors in the Team Championship round of the Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run competition May 20 at Safeco Field.

Following the Seattle Mariners’ 1-0 shutout of the Cincinnati Reds, Millar made her way down to the field and competed against two other sectional winners in the 7/8 age group from Idaho and Oregon to decide who has a chance of heading to the MLB All-Star game for the national competition.

“I was a lot bigger when I got down here,” said Millar of Safeco Field. “I liked running on the dirt the most.”

Competitors were able to take three swings off a tee from home plate to see which traveled the furthest, then see who could run from second base to home the fastest and finally throw six pitches to see how many strikes they could throw.

Major League Baseball took the top three scores from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and British Columbia to compete.

Millar shined in the pitching portion, throwing strikes in all but one of her throws, easily outdoing her competition.

She now waits to see if her score is one of the top four out of 30 competitions across the country. A Team Championship is held in each major league ballpark and the top four scores keep going.

Each participant earned a ticket to the June 20 Mariners game and was able to meet pitchers Cliff Lee and Justin Vargas before the game, getting autographs from one.

“They were really nice,” Millar said. “I liked them.”

The Pitch, Hit & Run competition has been going for 14 consecutive years. More than 600,000 kids competed in it this year, making Millar among the top 30.
