In their first 5k race of the cross country season, the Tomahawk girls showed their dominance over Mariner and host Arlington by sweeping five of the top six finishes.
Senior Haley Nemra was first overall, finishing the River Meadows course in 20:17. She was followed by junior Lauren Ainsworth, in 20:34 and sophomore Kaylie Kimmell in 20:55.
Junior Marissa Schafer finished the course fifth overall, behind Arlingtons Sarah Rayner. Senior captain Robin Mueller finished in the final scoring slot for Marysville with a 21:41 time.
It was much more of a competition on the boys side. Arlingtons Paul Simbeck won the race, but team M-P won the meet by three points.
Eight seconds out of first, Ryan Lanphere led the Tomahawks with a 16:59 finish. Sophomores Kevin Mangat and John Crenshaw finished together in 17:35 and 17:36, taking fourth and fifth overall. Fellow sophomores Stevie Utt and Josh Rasmussen helped seal the win with their 18:01 and 18:06 finishes for eighth and ninth place.
Without a weekend competition, the Sept. 12 meet left the Tomahawks a week to prepare for a Sept. 19 meet at Lyndale Park. Among the programs theyll meet there is Wesco arch nemesis Snohomish. M-P coach Randy Edens said he looks forward to the contest.
Theyve been very, very good and we kind of see where we are matched up with them. Wednesday on a tough course, very hilly, should be a good test for our kids, Edens said.
He added that the week did not go to waste as the program put in some extra work.
I think last week was probably one of the harder weeks weve had in our program. I think our kids were feeling it, but I think it will pay off down the road, he said.
