LAKEWOOD – Jelly Perry had a monster game.
So much so that at the end of the third quarter, when she fired a bullet almost the length of the basketball court, no one doubted she might make it.
She didn’t. She threw it too hard.
Perry was intense the entire game, scoring 28 points and ripping down 18 rebounds leading Lakewood’s girls basketball team to a 55-44 win over Everett at its own Cougar Holiday Classic Wednesday.
Perry hit two 3’s as the Cougars jumped out to an 8-2 lead. Another senior guard, Emily Senyitko, tallied the next six points as the home team led 14-10 after a period. The Seagulls had trouble dribbling the ball, and the Cougars took advantage with a number of steals, not only in that period but the entire game.
Lakewood put on a full-court press to start the second quarter, but the only thing that did was lead to turnovers. The Cougars didn’t score for almost half the period, and Everett took a 19-14 lead. Perry ended that drought grabbing an offensive rebound, leading to a three-point play, and then driving for another score. Senyitko hit a 3 and junior forward Riley Molloy grabbed a loose ball and went all the way to score. But the Seagulls led at halftime 25-24.
Senyitko started the second half with a 3 and when Perry also hit one Lakewood went ahead to stay at 30-27. Perry’s long bounce pass under the bucket to Molloy and Senyitko scoring after an offensive rebound put Lakewood up 37-33 at the end of three.
Seagulls Kate Pohland and Brooklyn Johnson tried to keep Everett close, but Perry was just too dominating. She scored off an offensive rebound, and again on a nice pass from Molloy. Molloy hit a 3 then Perry scored on a layup after a steal. After Senyitko scored another 3, Lakewood ended the game with some nice passing for assists. First, Perry scored after a pass from Molloy, then Senyitko scored with an assist to Perry. Not to be outdone, Perry then passed to Senyitko for the final score.
For Lakewood, Senyitko added 19, Molloy 7 and Jaedyn Graham 1.
Pohland and Johnson led the Seagulls, 1-8, with 20 and 18 points.
Lakewood improved to 3-0 and played in its own championship game Thursday night after deadline.
