MARYSVILLE — Marysville-Pilchuck and Snohomish traded a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes before playing to a 1-1 draw Saturday at Quil Ceda Stadium.
The Wesco clash pitted the top two teams from last year. The Panthers, a perennial powerhouse, and the Tomahawks figure to be near the top again this season. The teams battled for 80 minutes and two five-minute overtimes before settling for a tie.
Snohomish scored first, but only one minute later M-P junior Douglas Cruz-Young launched a deep free kick from about 45 yards out. The ball bounced once inside the 18-yard box and then hit off the crossbar, ricocheting back in front of the net. Off the rebound, senior forward Kyle Matson slotted home the deflection to give the Tomahawks a ninth-minute equalizer.
M-P had an opportunity to pull in front on a penalty kick midway through the first half, but Snohomish goalkeeper Michael Herrera made a diving save on a low roller to his left by the Tommies Randy Galvan.
Despite graduating six starters from last year’s league championship team, M-P has outscored opponents by a 17-4 margin in going 5-1.
Meanwhile, Marysville Getchell got its first win of the season, blanking Oak Harbor 4-0. Jack Rimstad scored two goals to lead the way. Ethan Fuerte and Rogelio Salgado scored one goal each.
