MARYSVILLE — Coach Julie Martin and the Tomahawks have a number of questions to address before opening the season Dec. 2 at Squalicum.
The most pressing question is how to replace All-Conference post Britt Harris — now playing at Northwest Nazarene University — who averaged 15 points and 13 rebounds per contest the past season.
“We’re going to try some new things and move some people around this year,” Martin said. “We’ve got talent, we’ve just got to make sure we use it.”
Despite losing a trio of seniors, the Tomahawks are returning a pair of guards in Andi Adams and Alisha Oden to help smooth the transition for a young team that looks to have a handful of juniors.
Oden, the Tomahawks’ only senior, will be asked to take a strong leadership position on the team, and keep its up-tempo style running — two responsibilities Martin said she is more than capable of.
“She is one of the best defenders that I’ve ever had here,” Martin said. “She is the entire package of an athlete. She’s athletic and can do everything you ask — and one of the most coachable players I’ve had.”
Adams, a junior, spent the majority of last season nursing a knee injury and Martin is excited to have her back running the offense and playing at a high level. Adams is one of four juniors returning to the varsity roster, along with guard Morgan Martinis, and forwards Chelanne Peterson and Dacia Heckendorf.
“A lot of these girls have been playing varsity last year and know what to expect — and they’ve played together for a long time through junior high,” Martin said.
As far as the Wesco Conference goes, Martin said she likes her team’s chances, as a number of teams lost their top players and it’s going to be a year of youth. The Tomahawks are looking to build off a season that ended just one win from the 4A state tournament, with a 55-49 loss to Jackson.
“It’s pretty much wide open this year,” she said. “There was a lot of talent that graduated and it’s going to be interesting to see which teams step into those top spots.”
