MARYSVILLE — Things looked good for the Tomahawks in the first swim meet against Snohomish since the new Glacier Peak High School split the student body.

M-P defeated Snohomish 119-67 and Glacier Peak 146-26 at home in the Jan. 13 meet.

The rivalry wasn’t as heated as its been in recent years. The Snohomish ranks were depleted by the new school opening and one of the top Panther swimmers never got in the pool.

In deference, the Tomahawks gave some swimmers a breather, racing in only two events where they would have competed in four a year ago.

M-P still won two relays, bookending the meet with wins in the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. Junior Brandon Caldwell and freshman Josh Estella swam on both winning relays, the former race about a second outside of a state time, although the team has already qualified this season.

While district times were in abundance, the Tomahawks had only four state times against the Panthers, two from senior Trevor LeValley. He won the 200 freestyle to give the Tomahawks back-to-back wins opening the meet. That effort was followed by a second-place finish in the breaststroke where he was seven-10ths of a second behind teammate Spencer Girard. Brody Coleman gave M-P a sweep of the top three places in that event, finishing in 1:05.89, about two seconds from a state time.

Tomahawks swept the top three places in the backstroke as well with juniors Riley Drabb and Jake Heath runners up to Oliver Durand, who had the team’s fourth state time, a 56.90, just one-10th of a second under the automatic-qualifying time.

Marysville won several events, with Girard earning a second win in the 200 individual medley, Drabb winning the butterfly and Gabe Lopez winning the 500 freestyle.

M-P followed the win over Snohomish with a 119-64 win over Stanwood Jan. 15.
