MARYSVILLE About 70 students took advantage of the Marysville sports physical Aug. 14, raising $2,800 for M-Ps Scholar Athlete honorees from the Class of 2008.
The examination, provided through the Marysville School District and administered by Dr. Gerald Yoriokas Yorioka Scholarship Foundation, went above and beyond the typical sports physical, district athletic director Greg Erickson said.
While competition from local clinics has driven down demand for the physical provided by the school district, Erickson said it remains an attractive option to people for a variety of reasons.
Its very thorough. Dr. Yorioka told me its value is a $300-plus physical, if not more. Youre in there for about an hour, and its fairly time consuming. Its the type of physical where we do the lung-capacity test, a stress test. Most offices dont have the time or ability to do that, Erickson said.
He added that the fact the physical benefits two deserving local student-athletes is another motive.
Students may participate in district athletics with a physical on file from the last two years. Eleven-year-old Ruby Vargas plans to cram in as many sports as possible during that time.
She plans to go out for softball, volleyball which I really love and swimming.
Erickson said the physicals services are made possible thanks to area doctors donating their time and expertise.
They do it for a good cause. Theyre just happy to help out. Our sports med kids help out. Our cheerleaders. Its an effort for a good cause, he said.
