MARYSVILLE – It doesn’t get much bigger than this when it comes to high school football.

When Marysville-Pilchuck hosts Arlington Friday at Quil Ceda Stadium at 7 p.m., M-P will be playing for its playoff life.

After losing to Ferndale last Friday, the Tomahawks need to win to get in. Arlington can lose and still get in due to wins earlier this season.

Both teams are 5-2. Both could finish as high as second depending on the Oak Harbor-Squalicum outcome. But M-P could finish as low as fifth if it loses. The top four advance.

Arlington goes into the game on a high note after whipping Everett 49-28. The Eagles actually trailed at halftime 28-16, but outscored the Seagulls 33-0 in the second half to win going away.

Quarterback Anthony Whitis leads the offense with Griffin Gardoski his favorite receiver, but he spreads the ball around.

M-P comes into the game after a disappointing 42-21 loss to Ferndale.

Trenton Hurst ran for 111 yards on 17 carries and a 3-yard touchdown for the Tomahawks. Jordan Justice had 74 yards on just six carries. Bryan Sanders had a 95-yard kickoff return for a TD, and he ran the ball four times for 25 yards. Dillon Kuk led the receivers with four grabs for 52 yards. Quarterback Jake Elwood had the other TD on a 14-yard run.

In another Wesco 3A game, Oak Harbor got by Marysville Getchell 42-14. Caleb Koellmer threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns for the Chargers, 2-5. One was for 39 yards to Landyn Olsen and other 13 yards to Trey Padgett. Nathan Broome caught five passes for 45 yards.

In 2A football, Lakewood won a non-league game over Orting 41-6.

Quarterback Jared Taylor hit eight receivers and racked up 338 yards and four touchdowns through the air while adding 134 yards and two scores on the ground. He hit 26 of 37 passes. Receiver Michai Harris had eight catches for 145 yards and two touchdowns.

Girls soccer

On Saturday, Kortney Crane scored the only goal to lead MG (2-9-3) to a 1-0 overtime upset win over Shorecrest (8-3-2).

On Oct. 11, Arlington got by M-P 2-1. For the Eagles, scoring goals were Hannah Hiester, unassisted, and Jersey Heiss, with an assist from Jordan Bartlow. Trina Davis scored for M-P, thanks to an assist from Kaila Linayo-Beua. The Eagles are now 5-7-1, while M-P is 3-9-1.

MG lost its game to Stanwood 1-0.

In 2A action, Lakewood trounded winless Mount Baker 5-2. Jaylene Priebe-Garcia scored two goals and added an assist for Lakewood. Iliana Ramirez, Jasmine Graham and Angela McDonald also scored for the Cougars. Kaley Chang added an assist.

Boys tennis

On Oct. 11, Jackson blanked Arlington 7-0, and Monroe got by M-P 4-3. Winners for the Tommies were: Parker Devereux at No. 1 singles; Carson Asper-Connor Peterson at No. 1 doubles, and Treven Southard-Aaron Kalab at No. 2 doubles.

Also, Arlington fell to Shorecrest 5-2. Winning for the Eagles were their top two doubles teams: Ben Spores-Ben Nichols 6-2, 6-1 and Tomas Ramirez-Cody Perdue 6-2, 7-5.

Girls swimming

Mount Vernon beat M-P 108-71 and MG 138-34 in a meet Oct. 11.

Winning for M-P were: 200 freestyle—Maddy Sulya 2 minutes, 30 seconds. 100 butterfly—Katelyn Leary 1:07, and 100 backstroke—Jennica Harper 1:13.2.

Winning for MG was diver Lexi Kilbourn with 249.2 points.

Girls volleyball

Arlington improved to 7-2, while M-P dropped to 2-8 as the Eagles won in three straight 25-11, 25-13 and 25-19 Oct. 11.

Arianna Bilby recorded 13 kills and nine digs to lead the Eagles. Caroline Diemer added 17 assists, eight digs, two aces and a kill. Julia Parra added eight kills.

Ayana Sabbas had eight assists and six digs, and Jenna Olson tacked on 10 digs for M-P

Also, MG fell to undefeated Stanwood 25-20, 25-10 and 25-22. Alyssa Hagar had six kills and five blocks for MG.
