OAK HARBOR — Thanks to some key competitors stepping up in multiple events, the Tomahawk girls track team defended its conference championship at Oak Harbor High School May 14 and 16.

With seven first-place finishes on the girls side, the Marysville-Pilchuck girls fought off Stanwood and Arlington teams to rise to the top of a field of nine teams. The Tomahawk boys had three first-place finishes, finishing second to Lake Stevens.

Senior Alex McDonald won league titles in both the girls 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, where she’ll go on to the district meet at Shoreline Stadium with teammate Laina Weber, who qualified in the same events, placing fifth in the 300 hurdles and eighth in the 100 hurdles finals.

Juniors Alisha Oden and Cali Cull combined finals victories in individual events with a winning relay for the Tomahawks. Oden won the 200-meter dash finals and ran a leg of the 4×100 relay with Cull, the winner in the girls long jump. Cull had a personal best in the long jump, improving by a foot and a half over her previous best this season for a mark of 17-1 1/4. Oden was also a runner-up in the 400 while Cull placed third in the triple jump with a season-best 34-6 1/4.

Freshman Summer Cull and sophomore Dacia Heckendorf joined Oden and Cull on the winning 4×100 relay and qualified for districts in individual events as well, finishing in the top eight in the pole vault and 200, respectively. The girls also combined with McDonald and freshman Farrah Bradley on the winning 4×400 relay.

A state veteran in the event, junior Sarah Clark took her first league title in the pole vault, winning the event by clearing a height of 10-3, and giving the M-P girls their seventh win in the two-day meet.

On the boys side, junior Mark Pangilinan was a double champion, eking out narrow wins in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. He also took third in the 110 hurdles and as a member of the 4×100 relay, the two events that took him to state last year. Senior Ryan Lanphere won the boys 1,600 and came close to doing the same in the 800, moving up from third place in prelims to second place in a time of 1:57.18.

Senior Michael Stone had a great league meet as well, moving on to districts in three field events. Pulling out personal bests in the pole vault, javelin and shot put, he placed second, fourth and seventh respectively in the three events.

Other top M-P finishes include Jenna Welsh, who took second in the girls javelin, Jacob Cartas, who placed third in the boys long jump, and Travis Sanderson, who placed third in the 300 hurdles. Complete results are available at www.athletic.net.

The top eight finishers from the league meet compete in the district meet at Shoreline Stadium May 20 and 22.
