Despite harsh weather, the M-P girls had a strong showing at the district golf tournament at Gallery Golf Course, qualifying all six golfers from the first day for the second round.

The team’s two-day performance May 13 and 15 added up to a fifth-place team finish and qualified one golfer as an alternate to the state tournament at Sudden Valley Golf Course in Bellingham.

“It was a 8 a.m. shotgun start. The torrential rain and wind started at about 8:40 and did not let up the entire time we played,” said M-P coach Jaci Legore Hodgins of day one of districts. “Many of the of the girls suffered from wet gloves and grips and some even had clubs fly out of their hands.”

Legore Hodgins added that her team came prepared, which helped each Tomahawk golfer finish in the top 40 and qualify for the second day.

By the end of May 13, four Tomahawk golfers were among the top 20, with junior Brielle Saunders and sophomore Stacia Ashley tied for 15th place in the standings, and junior Sara Rott and freshman Abby Beauchamp tied at 19th.

Beauchamp enjoyed the best second-day game of her teammates, finishing districts tied for 14th place with Cascade’s Renee Brush, forcing a sudden-death showdown. Brush, a senior, won it, rendering Beauchamp first alternate to state.

“We are very proud of this team and we had a great year,” Legore Hodgins said. “Next year is going to be even better because we have a great shot at the district championship because we have so many players coming back.”

The Tomahawks graduate only senior Lynee Brown.
