In a busy week of competition, the M-P wrestling team picked up a non-league win, lost their Wesco North opener and placed third out of 16 teams at the Olympic High School tourney.
M-P came in third-place out of 16 teams and went 3-1 in dual meets to wrap up their Dec. 9 meet. Veteran coach Craig Iversen said it was a great day of growth for the younger members of the team.
The Tommies opened the meet with a narrow loss to North Kitsap 37-34, and then went 3-0 with wins over Prairie 60-18, Klahowya of Silverdale 37-36 and defeated Sequim 36-36 on the basis of a tiebreaker. M-P lost their Wesco North home opener 52-23 to Snohomish on Dec. 7. Overall I thought we had a great night of wrestling, Iversen said.
We made some young mistakes in spots, but the guys made some great effort and were just a little short on the points.
Senior co-captain Jesse Masten won his 152-lb. match via pin, sophomore Ricky Dschaak won a 22-16 decision at the 215-lb. level, freshman 103-lb. Brian Donaldson won 19-5, and junior Jason Blevins won his 112-lb. match. Senior Richard Templeman won by major decision at 125-lb. as M-P fell to 0-1 in league action and 2-1 overall.
M-P got their non-league season off on a positive note on Dec. 5 with a resounding 66-9 victory over Shorewood. Co-captains Templeman, 125-lb. and Masten, 152-lb. each won to highlight the lopsided win.
The Tommies received victories from sophomore Mike Pfeif, freshman Brian Donaldson, Dschaak, junior Jason Blevins, juniors Nick Libbing and Bobby Kossak, senior Jeremy Dormaier, Josh Lee, Mitch Johnson and Kenny York.
Iversen said he is excited about the continued growth of the 2006 squad.
