MARYSVILLE The Tommies went 1-1 in their first two meets of the 2006-07 season with a non-league loss to Shorewood at home and then a resounding victory over Wesco North foe Everett 48 hours later.
Thursday, Dec. 7 M-P triumphed over the Seagulls of Everett 113-71 on the road and were led by the two first-place finishes of sophomore Trevor LeValley.
LeValley touched the wall first in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:07.55 and the 100-yard butterfly in 57.91.
Junior Aaron Goff swam to a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 25:15 and senior John Henninger was also victorious in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.66.
Junior diver Taylor Gibson scored 211.05 points to come out on top of the diving competition.
M-P claimed victories in both the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.
The 200-yard squad of Henninger, sophomore Andy Abadam, LeValley and Goff finished in 1:51.23 and the 400-yard team of LeValley, senior Klayton Schaufler, sophomore Gabe Lopez and Goff clocked a time of 3:45.64.
M-P improved to 1-0 in league competition and 1-1 overall while the Seagulls dropped to 0-1, 0-1.
The M-P boys swim and dive team gave it their all Tuesday, Dec. 5 in their season-opening meet against Shorewood at home, but fell short in the end 99-87.
LeValley led the Tommies with two first-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle (51.68) and 200-yard freestyle (1:52.10).
Freshman Oliver Durand (5:31.45) and sophomore Brody Coleman (5:45.08) finished 1-2 in the 500-yard freestyle and Lopez touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke in 58.55 seconds.
Swimming in his first high school meet, Durand said he felt good about his winning performance.
My time was a PR (personal best) time by 10-14 seconds, he said afterward.
Asked what motivated him in his M-P debut he merely shrugged his shoulders and said he wanted it more.
In the diving competition, Gibson (165.05 points) and sophomore Blake Allen (158.45) came in second and third-place, respectively, out of six.
Schaufler placed second (2:19.15) in the 200-yard individual medley, just ahead of Colemans third-place time of 2:20.24.
Schaufler led the pack in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:08.89.
Henninger came in second-place in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.79.
M-P finished in second-place in all three relay events the 200-yard medley, 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle.
In the 200-yard medley, Lopez, Schaufler, LeValley and Goff finished in a time of 1:47.60, a mere .22 hundredths of a second behind SW.
The 200-yard freestyle team of Schaufler, Abadam, Henninger and Goff touched the wall in 1:38.94.
The final race of the afternoon saw the 400-free relay team of Henninger, Lopez, Durand and LeValley finish in a time of 3:40.59.
Veteran coach Scott Knowles told his squad afterward that they put up a heck of a fight.
The kids swam to win and they did everything they could to win, he said.
I felt really good about that. Were going to get nothing but better this year. Today is just a starting point.
M-P has the second of four home meets in a row Thursday, Dec. 14 against perennial powerhouse Snohomish.
The meet begins at 3:30 p.m.
