MARYSVILLE — On one of the season’s first warm, sunny days, both the boys and girls M-P track teams took first place as they hosted the annual Tomahawk Classic on April 26.

Relays played a critical part in the girls’ victory as the 400-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter relays went to the home team. With jumps of 10-6 and 10-0, seniors Robin Mueller and Michaela Caldwell went 1-2 in the girls pole vault, giving the Tomahawks their fourth girls victory.

Individual performances lifted the M-P boys to first place as six different athletes won their events. Senior Blake Lovell uncorked his longest throw of the season, throwing just seven inches short of 170 feet. The mark left competitors from Lakewood, Arlington and Mountlake Terrace in his dust, back in the 150-foot range. Another senior, pole vaulter Taylor Gibson, left substantial space between himself and the next seven finishers by clearing 12-6 to best a field that included teammate Michael Stone, who tied for second place on attempts. Senior Brandon Greene took another bow at first place in the high jump, clearing 6-2. A fourth senior, hurdler Travis Sanderson, won the 300 intermediate hurdles in a time of 41.29.

Two juniors rounded out the Tomahawk event champions as Ryan Lanphere won the mile in 4:27.78 over Snohomish’s Chris Goodman, and Andy Abadam won the long jump with a best mark of 21-8.

Fractions of a second divided four Marysville girls from first place in their respective events. Senior Haley Nemra finished two-hundredths of a second behind Oak Harbor’s Mietra Smollack in the 800, while sophomore Alisha Oden was just three-hundreths of a second from winning the 200. Senior Nicolette Runyan and sophomore Cali Cull also fell less than a second from victory in the 100 and 400 respectively.

A similar margin vexed several Tomahawk boys as well. Long-jump champ Abadam finished two-tenths of a second behind Arlington’s Marcus Dolan to take second in the 100, while freshman Jacob Cartas and sophomore Mark Pangilinan stayed close in the race for the 200. Pangilinan took second in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 16.08 and the boys 400 relay of Abadam, Cartas, Pangilinan and Sanderson finished in 43.57, just behind Oak Harbor’s winning 43.50 time.
