MARYSVILLE — The Marysville Premier wrestling tournament went on without a hitch Jan. 16 at the Jim Linden Fieldhouse.

“It’s pretty fun to have so many people come and see all the support they get from their families all over the state,” said Marysville-Pilchuck coach Craig Iversen.

The tournament, in its 15th year and featuring wrestlers from 19 schools around Washington state, might not have had a closer finish in its history, with the result being determined on the final match.

Moses Lake’s Kabe Fluaitt defeated Snohomish’s Mike Maybin 7-1 in the heavyweight division to propel his team to victory, scoring 231 points over Snohomish’s 229.5.

“Moses Lake might have been the farthest team away, but they got a win out of it, so that makes the trip special for them,” Iversen said.

The Tomahawks proved to be formidable on their turf, placing fifth with 125.5 points, beating all five available Wesco North opponents but Snohomish, which M-P faced in a home dual Jan. 14.

“We were pretty happy with the way we wrestled and our result,” Iversen said. “There were a lot of good teams out there.”

Through five home duals so far this season, Marysville-Pilchuck is undefeated as part of its 14-1 overall record and its 5-1 mark in the Wesco North. It’s only loss so far this year has been at 4A defending state champion Lake Stevens.

Scoring the most for M-P was Jake Carlton, who was a finalist in the 189-pound weight class.

“We’re pretty proud of Jake’s performance,” Iversen said. “He showed his potential today.”
