MUKILTEO — The Tomahawks won the Wesco North title and suffered their first team defeat of the season on the same day.

In a meet that featured the class of the Wesco’s swimming talent, Marysville-Pilchuck came away with a 112-71 victory over Oak Harbor and a 118-68 loss to reigning class 4A state champion Kamiak.

“We just got smoked in the depth,” said M-P coach Scott Knowles. “They went two, three, four in a lot of races.”

The reigning Wesco North champion Tomahawks (11-1 overall, 7-0 Wesco North) concentrated their efforts on Oak Harbor, which was the only other undefeated team.

“I would have had Oliver (Durand) swim in a few different spots,” Knowles said. “But other than that, there wouldn’t have been a whole lot of difference.”

Nevertheless, Durand helped as much as possible, helping the Tomahawks start with first-place finishes in the first four events. The meet started with M-P’s Durand, Spencer Girard, Josh Estella and Brandon Caldwell edging out Kamiak in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:42.67. Girard (1:49.68) narrowly defeated Kamiak’s Trent Roberts (1:49.77) in the 200 free and Durand won the 200 IM convincingly with a state-qualifying time of 1:59.33.

“Spencer had a great meet. He had over a 2-second drop in the 200,” Knowles said. “A lot of the difference (between now and the start of the season) is him just getting ready for his races.”

Brandon Caldwell then won the 50 free event with a 23.33 time and despite winning the first four of 12 events, the Tomahawks found themselves trailing by nearly a dozen points halfway through the meet due to Kamiak’s depth. Knowles said he could see the difference between his Nos. 2 and 3 swimmers in every event with Kamiak.

“You watch the Kamiak kins, they were really attacking the races,” he said. “Our kids swam hard, but racing is a whole other thing.”

Durand also won the 100 backstroke (56.09), and headed the 200 freestyle relay team along with Estella, Girard and Caldwell that was narrowly defeated by Kamiak.
