ARLINGTON – Michael Van Beek of Arlington, who walked on as a freshman last year with the Washington State University football team, saw his first action last weekend.
In the home game at Martin Stadium against Colorado, defensive lineman No. 64 not only got to play but he was in on his first tackle.
The Cougs won 31-7 to improve to 4-3 on the year.
It was a proud day for his dad, Tom.
“I tried not to cry when he walked into the Cougar Prowl but as soon as I saw him my eyes started watering,” Tom said.
He said his son had been dreaming of that day since he was 6.
“A lot of blood, sweat, tears and hard work went into this day,” Tom said.
Michael earned the right to suit up by being named Defensive Scout Player of the Day last Tuesday; Special Teams Scout Player of the Day Wednesday; and Defensive Scout Player of the Week Thursday.
